Dynamic flutist Mitzy Nonaka brings enthusiasm to a variety of genres, with a focus on orchestral performance, soundtrack/session recording, and contemporary chamber music. Recent projects include the All Shadows film soundtrack, recitals with Guitarist Lucas Pullin, and performances with a variety of regional orchestras. Cofounding the Mosaic Flute Duo with Natasha Loomis, their 2017-18 “Pathways” program was featured in recital at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, the Juilliard Composer’s Concert, Silvana Harlem, and other venues across the East Coast. As an orchestral flutist, Mitzy has performed with orchestras including the Terre Haute Symphony, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, the Light Opera of New York, Garden State Symphony and many others. In 2018, Mitzy and oboist Cat Cantrell appeared as soloists performing Antonio Salieri’s Concerto for Flute and Oboe in C Major with the Bergen Symphony Orchestra. She has earned a place on the Terra Haute Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and the Boise Philharmonic sublists, toured the Yucutan Penninsula with the OperaMaya Festival Orchestra, and recorded under Albany Records.
Teaching is a backbone of Mitzy’s musical life, and she is on faculty with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Music Partners program, SUPtown Music and Arts, and the Shin Kwan Cultural School. Outside of music, learning languages, petting animals, cooking, and spending time in the great outdoors fill Mitzy’s days!
Mitzy earned her Bachelor’s in Music at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music with Tara Helen O’Connor and her MM at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with Thomas Robertello, where she was the recipient of the Graduate Tuition Award and Deans Scholarship. Additional private study with Bart Feller and Kathleen Nester.
